Manchester United agree to pay Wolves £62.5m in three instalments over two years, clearing the way for Cunha’s medical and transfer

Matheus Cunha is poised to become Manchester United’s latest signing after the club agreed to meet Wolves’ £62.5 million release clause for the Brazilian forward. United had initially proposed spreading the payment over five years, but Wolves insisted on payment in three instalments over two years, as stipulated in Cunha’s recent contract.

After lengthy negotiations, Manchester United accepted Wolves’ terms, which paved the way for the club to start Cunha’s medical and move to finalise the transfer. The 26-year-old forward, who scored 17 goals and contributed six assists in 34 appearances this season for Wolves, is reportedly eager to join United despite the club’s absence from European competitions next season.

Cunha’s decision reflects his ambition to play for one of the world’s biggest football clubs. Sources close to the player suggest he sees a move to Old Trafford as a significant step forward, ahead of interest from other European clubs.

Sky Sports Chief Reporter Kaveh Solhekol outlined the key stages of the deal. United triggered the release clause after agreeing to Wolves’ payment terms. The £62.5m will be paid in three instalments of approximately £21m each over the next two years. This structure aligns with financial fair play regulations and is manageable for a club of Manchester United’s stature.

Despite financial concerns surrounding United following their failure to qualify for the Champions League—potentially missing out on over £100m in revenue—this transfer demonstrates the club’s intent to strengthen its squad aggressively. Discussions are also underway regarding other transfers this summer, both incoming and outgoing, as United look to rebuild.

Football journalist Sam Blitz highlighted how Cunha could fit into the current Manchester United squad, particularly in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system. Cunha’s pace, versatility, and goal-scoring ability are seen as complementary to the team’s existing attacking options, including captain Bruno Fernandes.

Wolves, on the other hand, face the challenge of replacing a key attacking player who has been instrumental in their campaign. The loss of Cunha would be significant, but the sizeable transfer fee will provide the club with funds to invest in reinforcements.

The transfer window officially opens on June 1, marking the start of what is expected to be a busy summer for Manchester United. If Cunha passes his medical, the deal will be formally announced, marking a major coup for the club amid a crucial period of rebuilding under manager Ruben Amorim.

For Cunha, the move offers a chance to compete on one of football’s biggest stages and potentially return to Champions League football with United. After a standout season in the Premier League, the Brazilian forward will be hoping to continue his development and help restore Manchester United’s status among Europe’s elite.
