Mark Stoneman, Hampshire’s latest signing, insists he isn’t replacing James Vince but hopes to lead from the front as the club chases a long-awaited County Championship title
Former England batter Mark Stoneman has dismissed suggestions that he is a direct replacement for James Vince at Hampshire but believes his experience could help the club end its 50-year wait for a County Championship title.
The 37-year-old left Middlesex at the end of the 2024 season and signed a one-year deal with Hampshire in February. His arrival came just a month after Vince, last season’s top run-scorer, announced his decision to prioritise white-ball cricket.
While Stoneman acknowledges Vince’s absence played a role in his move to the Utilita Bowl, he insists there is no replacing the 34-year-old.
“I’m absolutely not a Vince replacement,” Stoneman told BBC Radio Solent’s Kevan James. “I’m just here to be the best Mark Stoneman I can be, and hopefully, that’s enough to take Hampshire forward.”

The experienced left-hander, who represented England in 11 Test matches between 2017 and 2018, has amassed over 250 first-class appearances with an average of 34.23. Despite being in the latter stage of his career, he remains as determined as ever.
“I feel as motivated, driven, and determined as ever to perform,” he said.
With Hampshire set to kick off their County Championship campaign against newly-promoted Yorkshire on 4 April, Stoneman expects to take on the role of opening batter.
“That’s my strongest suit, that’s where I’ve plied my trade for nearly 20 years now,” he explained. “I’m hoping to get out there, get the team off to a good start, and put the runs on the board that we need to push for wins.”
Chasing a Long-Awaited Title
Hampshire finished as runners-up in Division One last season, with Vince leading the scoring charts for the fourth consecutive year. The club’s last County Championship triumph came in 1973, and Stoneman believes the squad has what it takes to end that drought.
“It’s a really competitive side with a very proud history,” he said. “We’ve got a squad that can go all the way, and I’d love to be part of something special here.”
With a fresh season ahead, Hampshire fans will be eager to see if Stoneman can provide the stability at the top of the order that the team needs to finally lift the trophy.
