Struggling Red Devils end year in 14th, facing unprecedented crisis

Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that relegation is a genuine possibility for the club, marking an extraordinary low point in its modern history. The admission follows a disastrous December, with six losses in all competitions and 18 goals conceded, their worst defensive month since 1964.

Amorim, reflecting on the club’s steep decline, told the BBC: “It is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans.” The team’s performance under Amorim, who took charge on November 24, has failed to improve, with United losing more games since then than almost any other Premier League side.

The Red Devils are set to end the year in 14th place in the Premier League—their lowest position at this point since 1989. With three consecutive home defeats and a squad lacking cohesion, Amorim described the situation as “a little bit lost” and called for drastic change.

Relegation would not only shock the footballing world but also deliver a massive financial blow to the club. Missing out on Champions League football is already projected to cost £10m under their Adidas sponsorship deal, while relegation could see the club grappling with unprecedented financial challenges.

As United faces the prospect of midweek trips to Championship sides like Bristol City and Oxford United—or even Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham—fans and critics alike are questioning whether the iconic club can avoid its most humiliating chapter in 50 years.
