Manchester United secures former Manchester City Academy director Jason Wilcox, enhancing the club’s technical leadership under new ownership

Manchester United has officially appointed Jason Wilcox as the new technical director, a key part of billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s strategic overhaul of the club. This significant move was confirmed after Manchester United and Southampton agreed on a compensation package, allowing Wilcox to leave his previous role as director of football at Southampton and join United with immediate effect.

At 53, Wilcox brings a wealth of experience to Old Trafford, having previously served as academy director at Manchester City, where he was credited with nurturing young talents like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer. His transition to Manchester United is seen as a crucial element in reinforcing the club’s commitment to developing both its first-team and academy structures.

Wilcox’s appointment comes shortly after the departure of John Murtough, United’s former football director, and is part of a broader reshuffle initiated by Ratcliffe, who recently acquired a 27.7% stake in the club. His arrival is expected to inject new ideas and momentum into the Red Devils’ pursuit of returning to the top of English and European football.

In his new role, Wilcox will report to an as-yet-unappointed sporting director, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe actively pursuing Dan Ashworth of Newcastle for the position. Ashworth has expressed interest in the role and is currently on gardening leave from Newcastle until the end of his contract in January 2026.

The strategic moves by Manchester United under Ratcliffe’s stewardship reflect a clear ambition to revitalize the club’s operations and competitive edge. Wilcox’s proven track record in football management and youth development is anticipated to play a pivotal role in achieving these objectives.

As Manchester United fans and the football world watch these developments, the expectations are high for a revival of the club’s fortunes under its new leadership. The strategic hires, including the anticipated addition of Ashworth, are seen as foundational steps towards restoring Manchester United’s historical stature in both domestic and international arenas
