A 35-year-old man from Wigan was arrested at Manchester Airport for allegedly throwing missiles at police.
A man was arrested by police moments after landing at Manchester Airport as part of an ongoing investigation into violent disorder in Southport last summer.
The 35-year-old suspect, originally from Wigan, was detained on Monday (March 24) after arriving on a flight from Spain. According to Merseyside Police, he is suspected of throwing missiles at officers during the chaos that unfolded in Southport following a violent attack last July.

The arrest is linked to riots that erupted in the seaside town last summer after three schoolgirls were stabbed at a dance class. The shocking attack triggered a wave of violence and unrest, with crowds clashing with law enforcement. Axel Rudakubana was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 52 years for the murders and attempted murders of multiple victims.
Since then, police have made 185 arrests and charged 146 individuals in connection with the disorder. The latest arrest at Manchester Airport marks another step in the ongoing investigation.
Police Confirm Investigation Is Ongoing
Merseyside Police confirmed that the Wigan man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
A police spokesperson stated: “Yesterday, Monday 24 March, detectives arrested a 35-year-old man from Wigan on suspicion of violent disorder when he landed at Manchester Airport from Spain. The suspect was seen throwing missiles at officers during the disorder in Southport. He has been bailed with conditions pending further inquiries.”
Authorities Urge Others to Come Forward
Detective Inspector Paula Jones reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable, warning that anyone involved in the riots should surrender voluntarily.
“We have made 185 arrests and charged 146 people in connection with violence and disruption that damaged our communities on Merseyside. The disgusting scenes witnessed will not be tolerated, and we advise anyone else who took part in the disorder to do the right thing and hand themselves in,” she said.
Authorities continue to analyse images and footage from the unrest to identify others involved. The public is urged to report any relevant information via the online portal at mipp.police.uk or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact
The Southport riots left the community reeling, with significant damage to property and multiple injuries reported. Law enforcement officials have reiterated their commitment to restoring order and ensuring justice for those affected by the violence.
As investigations continue, more arrests could follow, with police determined to track down everyone responsible for the mayhem that unfolded on the streets of Southport.
