Manchester United agree terms to sign Brazilian Matheus Cunha while Brentford line up Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The summer transfer window is beginning to heat up with two notable deals emerging on Monday. Manchester United have reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, while Brentford are set to bolster their goalkeeping options with a move for Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.
Cunha, 26, arrived in Manchester over the weekend to finalise his transfer to Old Trafford, pending visa and registration clearance. The striker, who scored 18 goals across all competitions last season and has earned 13 senior caps for Brazil, represents Manchester United’s first major signing after a turbulent campaign that saw the club finish a disappointing 15th in the Premier League and suffer defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
A statement from Manchester United confirmed the deal: “Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
The move marks a significant investment in the squad by manager Ruben Amorim, who is keen to reshape the team ahead of next season and improve on last year’s underwhelming performances.
Meanwhile, Brentford have turned their attention to Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. With Mark Flekken expected to join Bayer Leverkusen, Brentford have agreed a deal worth an initial £12.5 million, potentially rising to £18 million with performance-related add-ons, to bring in the Republic of Ireland international.
Kelleher, who has one year left on his contract at Anfield, featured in over a quarter of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season, stepping up impressively when first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker was sidelined through injury.
The 27-year-old’s move to Brentford offers him a chance to establish himself as a regular starter, while Brentford look to reinforce their squad following last season’s challenges.
In other news, England’s national squad took a brief break from their World Cup qualifying preparations to enjoy the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Captain Harry Kane and teammates watched as Oscar Piastri edged out Lando Norris in a thrilling race. Notably, Manchester City defender John Stones, despite not being named in the squad, joined the group to continue his rehabilitation alongside manager Thomas Tuchel.
The football pyramid also witnessed an exciting finish at Wembley, where Oldham secured promotion to League Two by beating Southend 3-2 in extra time during the National League play-off final. The match featured dramatic twists, including an early own goal from Manny Monthe, a penalty from Joe Garner, and a late winner from Kian Harratt. Oldham join Barnet in returning to the English Football League next season.
With the transfer window opening fully, football fans can expect more moves in the coming weeks as clubs across the leagues strengthen their squads for the challenges ahead.
