In a significant display of solidarity, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his country’s support for the United Nations Security Council resolution on Kashmir during his recent three-day visit to Pakistan. This visit, which took place from October 1 to October 3, 2024, involved discussions with his Pakistani counterpart, Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting Malaysia’s commitment to addressing the longstanding Kashmir issue.

At a press conference following their bilateral meeting, Ibrahim stated, “Regarding Kashmir, we have clearly stated that we are committed to supporting the UN Security Council resolution, while human rights concerns are, of course, a priority for us.” His comments pointed directly to the 1948 UN resolution, underlining Malaysia’s position on the matter. The Prime Minister expressed hope for an amicable resolution, stating that Malaysia would pursue the issue “through acceptable channels.” This commitment not only reinforces Malaysia’s diplomatic stance but also showcases its sensitivity towards human rights, a concern that resonates deeply in the region.

The discussions between the two leaders extended beyond Kashmir, covering a broad range of topics aimed at enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and Malaysia. Sharif noted, “We discussed trade, investment opportunities, strategic and defence collaboration, tourism, agriculture, semiconductors, green energy, skilled labour, and youth empowerment.” The emphasis on economic cooperation underscores a mutual desire to bolster ties that extend beyond political discourse.

In particular, the two leaders addressed significant trade opportunities, including the export of Halal meat, estimated at a staggering $200 million per year, and the potential sale of Basmati rice. Ibrahim highlighted Malaysia’s aspirations to expand its economic footprint in Pakistan, mentioning plans to increase flights between the two nations and to welcome more Pakistani tourists.

Throughout the visit, Ibrahim also expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s position on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He spoke with respect for Pakistan’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, recognising their contributions to the nation’s identity. This cultural appreciation served to strengthen the bond between the two leaders and their countries.

During the joint press conference, both Ibrahim and Sharif addressed the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “I hope that through joint efforts, we can implement a ceasefire,” Sharif remarked, denouncing the violence as unparalleled in contemporary history. Ibrahim echoed these sentiments, asserting that the conflict is marked by “intransigence” and “aggression,” which blatantly disregard fundamental international norms.
