The museum president considers dedicated space to enhance the visitor experience

The Louvre, the world’s most renowned museum, is contemplating a significant change in its layout to accommodate the Mona Lisa in her own dedicated space, announced the museum’s president, Laurence des Cars.

Des Cars highlighted the necessity of enhancing visitors’ experience, especially for those who come to see the iconic Mona Lisa. She expressed frustration at the current situation and emphasized the need for a better solution.

“We need to provide the best possible reception to our visitors, and currently, that’s not happening, especially for the Mona Lisa,” said Des Cars. “A better solution is necessary.”

According to Des Cars, discussions are ongoing with the culture ministry regarding potential options for this new arrangement.

The Mona Lisa, one of the most famous portraits in the world, attracts thousands of visitors every day. Des Cars noted that approximately 80% of the Louvre’s daily visitors, totaling around 20,000 people, make their way through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the painting and often take selfies in front of it.

Currently, the Mona Lisa is displayed in the Louvre’s Salle des États, the museum’s largest room, within a protective glass case. However, it shares space with works by other artists, including 16th-century Venetian masters, and is located across from the Louvre’s largest painting, The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese.

The Mona Lisa faced an attempted attack in January when two environmental protesters threw soup at the portrait. Despite being behind bulletproof glass, the painting remained unharmed.

The proposed move to give the Mona Lisa her own space reflects the museum’s commitment to providing an optimal experience for visitors and ensuring the preservation of this priceless masterpiece.
