In a crucial turn of events at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Liverpool’s star player, Mohamed Salah, was forced off the field due to injury during Egypt’s intense match against Ghana. The 31-year-old forward, who previously scored in Egypt’s 2-2 draw against Mozambique, left the pitch just before half-time, raising concerns for both Egypt and Liverpool.

Salah, a key figure for both Egypt and Liverpool, had to be substituted with a suspected hamstring injury, leaving the field at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium. His teammates consoled him as Mostafa Fathi stepped in as his replacement.

The unfortunate timing of Salah’s exit seemed to impact Egypt’s performance, as moments after the substitution, Ghana seized the lead with Mohamed Kudus scoring from the edge of the box. Despite Egypt’s efforts to level the score, including a goal from Omar Marmoush, Ghana managed to regain control with Kudus netting his second. The match concluded with a 2-2 draw.

Salah’s absence from Liverpool’s recent games has already been notable, missing fixtures such as the FA Cup win against Arsenal and the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg victory against Fulham. If Egypt advances to the AFCON final in February, Salah could potentially miss up to 11 games for Liverpool.

With Liverpool currently leading the Premier League, Salah’s absence could impact their title race. Jurgen Klopp’s team is set to resume action after the winter break with a match against Bournemouth, followed by the return Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg clash with Fulham.

Egypt will be hopeful to have Salah back for their third and final group game against Cape Verde on Monday. The outcome of the Group B matches, especially Ghana and Mozambique’s face-off, will determine Egypt’s qualification for the Round of 16.

After Egypt’s draw against Mozambique, Coach Rui Vitoria acknowledged a lapse in concentration but expressed optimism, stating, “We lost concentration for three minutes, but we are still in the race to qualify; nothing is lost.”
