A cemetery bench and mailbox now stand in memory of Liam Payne, as fans mourn his tragic loss.
Liam Payne’s devoted fans in Buenos Aires have unveiled a cemetery bench in his honour, marking a poignant tribute to the late singer at the British Cemetery where his body briefly rested before repatriation.
On Sunday, fans gathered under grey skies to commemorate the former One Direction star, who tragically died on 16 October 2024 after falling from a hotel’s third floor. The memorial, inspired by traditional British park benches, features an inscription from History, a song Payne recorded with One Direction: “You and me got a whole lot of history, so don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever, Liam.”
A priest attended the ceremony, offering blessings as mourners laid flowers and placed a framed portrait of Payne on the bench.
“It means a lot for the fans to have a place and bench in Liam’s name here,” said 26-year-old Luana Bustamante. “This is where Liam spent his last days in Argentina, in the chapel here, which served as a refuge before he was repatriated.”
The 31-year-old singer’s death was ruled as a result of multiple trauma and internal bleeding from the fall. His body remained in Buenos Aires for weeks while forensic investigations were completed before being returned to the UK on 6 November.
In addition to the bench, fans installed a red mailbox where visitors can leave messages for Payne’s family.
“We know how many girls are going to come here and want to leave a message,” said Lucia Esquivel, 24. “If possible, we want to send them through the cemetery’s caretaker to the United Kingdom. We hope with all our hearts this can be done.”
As the ceremony concluded, the grief-stricken yet devoted fans reflected on Payne’s enduring legacy. Though his life was cut tragically short, his music and memory continue to live on through those who cherished him.
