Leonid Volkov, a prominent Russian opposition figure, hospitalized after a hammer assault near his Vilnius home

In a shocking incident that has reverberated through the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and beyond, Leonid Volkov, a close ally of the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, was violently attacked with a hammer outside his home on Tuesday night. Volkov, who has been a key figure in Russian opposition circles and the former chief of staff for Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, was admitted to the hospital following the assault, highlighting the dangers faced by Russian dissidents even in exile.

The attack, detailed by Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh on social media, involved the assailant breaking a car window, spraying tear gas in Volkov’s eyes, and subsequently hitting him with a hammer. The injuries sustained by Volkov were severe enough to necessitate immediate hospitalization, with images shared by his wife, Anna Biryukova, showing the physical toll of the assault, including a black eye, a red mark on his forehead, and bleeding through his jeans.

This violent incident comes nearly a month after Navalny’s death in a remote penal colony, a development that has drawn international condemnation and renewed scrutiny of the Kremlin’s treatment of political opponents. Navalny, who had been serving a 19-year sentence on charges widely regarded as politically motivated, had been a thorn in the side of President Vladimir Putin’s regime, with his foundation and network of regional offices being targeted by the Russian government.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, expressed his shock at the assault, emphasizing that the perpetrators must be held accountable. The attack on Volkov underscores the precarious situation of Russian opposition figures, even when residing outside of Russia’s borders. Lithuania, which has become a refuge for many Russian exiles and has vocally supported Ukraine against Russia’s aggression, now finds itself as the backdrop for this latest act of violence against a critic of the Putin administration.

Volkov’s commitment to challenging the Kremlin’s authority, exemplified by his involvement in “Navalny’s Campaigning Machine” and efforts to mobilize Russian citizens against Putin in the upcoming presidential election, underscores the ongoing resistance against the Kremlin’s crackdown on dissent. However, this attack serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by those who stand in opposition to Putin’s Russia, even in countries that offer sanctuary from the Kremlin’s reach.

As investigations into the attack continue, the international community watches closely, with many seeing this as a test of the resolve to protect political exiles and the lengths to which the Kremlin’s influence might extend to silence its critics.
