Norris reflects on the heartbreak of losing the 2024 title to Verstappen and vows to fight harder in 2025

Lando Norris, the 25-year-old British Formula 1 sensation, has set his sights on the 2025 F1 season, vowing to ‘bring the fight to everyone’ after a bittersweet 2024 campaign in which he finished second to Max Verstappen in the drivers’ championship.

Speaking candidly on the BBC podcast F1: Back at Base, Norris admitted the sting of falling short despite a breakthrough year filled with personal and professional milestones. “When the realisation sets in that it’s over, it hurts. This is my life—it’s all I’ve ever wanted,” Norris said, his voice tinged with determination.

The McLaren driver had an exceptional 2024 season, securing his maiden Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix in May and notching up an impressive tally of eight pole positions and four race victories. His performances in the latter half of the season brought him tantalisingly close to dethroning Verstappen, narrowing the gap to just 47 points with four races to go. However, Verstappen’s win in Brazil sealed the Dutchman’s grip on the title, leaving Norris to ponder what might have been.

Despite the heartbreak, Norris takes pride in his progress. “It’s been a year where I’ve proven myself under immense pressure,” he reflected. “I’ve made mistakes, sure, but I’ve learned from every one of them. That’s what gives me confidence heading into 2025.”

Norris attributes much of his growth to his ability to perform under pressure, a skill he admits was previously a weakness. “Confidence is something I’ve struggled with in the past,” he confessed. “But this season, I’ve built enough to say, ‘I’m good enough to win a championship.’ That belief is key as I prepare for the battles ahead.”

With McLaren’s resurgence and a car capable of competing with Red Bull’s dominance, Norris is optimistic about his chances in 2025. “We have what it takes. I believe in my ability and in the team. I’ve improved massively, and I’m ready to fight anyone who challenges me.”

The upcoming season promises to be an intense battle, with Norris eager to turn his heartbreak into fuel for success. Fans can expect fireworks as the young Briton looks to challenge Verstappen and other top drivers in a bid for his first world championship.
