The city continues to grapple with alarming pollution levels, making it the most polluted city in the world once again

Lahore has once again made headlines for its alarming pollution levels, registering an unprecedented Air Quality Index (AQI) of 707 between 7 am and 8 am on Sunday. This staggering figure not only solidifies Lahore’s reputation as one of the most polluted cities globally but also poses significant health risks to its residents, as a thick blanket of smog enveloped the city throughout the day, severely limiting visibility.

On Sunday morning, Lahore’s AQI fluctuated dramatically, peaking at 707 at 8 am, followed closely by readings of 696 at 7 am and 700 at 9 am. However, as the day progressed, the AQI showed some signs of improvement, dropping to 537 by 10 am and 350 by 11 am. By the evening, at around 9 pm, the AQI was recorded at 236, but Lahore still maintained its position as the most polluted city worldwide, with New Delhi trailing behind at an AQI of 294, which peaked at 499 that same day.

The PM2.5 concentration in Lahore reached a staggering 249 µg/m³, which is 49.8 times above the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) annual air quality guideline value. Such high levels of particulate matter are linked to a range of serious health issues, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, further compounding the public health crisis in the region.

Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and take precautions, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The smog, largely attributed to emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, and crop burning, has become a recurring issue in Lahore, especially during the winter months.

Authorities have been urged to take immediate action to address the sources of pollution and implement long-term strategies to improve air quality. Experts recommend comprehensive measures, including stricter emissions controls, the promotion of public transportation, and increased green spaces to combat the persistent smog that engulfs the city.

As Lahore grapples with these critical environmental challenges, the urgent need for concerted efforts to mitigate pollution and safeguard public health has never been more apparent. The situation not only calls for immediate attention but also highlights the importance of sustainable practices to protect the well-being of future generations.
