Government leaders pledge to strengthen workers’ welfare on Labour Day

President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasize commitment to workers’ rights

On International Labour Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stood firm in their resolve to enhance the welfare of workers and safeguard their rights.

As the world commemorated the day dedicated to labourers, both leaders issued separate messages to mark the occasion. President Zardari urged Pakistani employers to adopt fair wage practices, ensure worker safety and health, and provide necessary training and protective equipment to those working in hazardous environments.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the dignity of labourers and paid tribute to their historic struggle. The president highlighted the theme for this year’s Labour Day, focusing on ensuring workplace safety and health amidst climate change.

“The labourers and the working class in Pakistan are facing unprecedented challenges,” President Zardari said. “The state has a crucial role to play in protecting the rights of workers and providing social support.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz honoured the immense sacrifices of workers who have dedicated themselves to the relentless struggle for their rights. He emphasized the government’s commitment to bringing domestic labour legislation in line with global standards.

The premier acknowledged the invaluable contributions of workers across various sectors and stressed that ensuring occupational safety and health was a top priority for the government. He announced plans to convene the inaugural National Tripartite Labour Conference to further this aim.

“We are determined to alleviate the hardships faced by low-income groups through special subsidies, social security, and poverty alleviation programs,” PM Shehbaz said.

Both leaders recognized the vital role of women workers and emphasized sustainable economic growth and job creation. Despite challenges, the government remains committed to enhancing workers’ welfare and protecting their rights.

As various organizations host events to honour workers and raise awareness about their rights, the government’s efforts continue to focus on implementing labour laws and ensuring the well-being of all workers in the country
