Royal experts speculate whether King Charles will take the difficult step of visiting his grandchildren in California amid strained family ties.

As King Charles prepares to resume his royal duties in 2025 following his cancer recovery, speculation is rife about whether he will make a long-awaited trip to the United States to meet his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. The children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live in California, far from the heart of the British monarchy, leaving the King with a difficult decision.

Royal commentator Russell Myers raised the possibility of the King visiting America while speaking on the “Pod Save The King” podcast. According to Myers, the monarch’s potential visit to the US could open the door to a reunion with Harry and Meghan’s children, whom he is reportedly desperate to meet. However, this suggestion was quickly dismissed by host Ann Gripper, who expressed doubts about such a trip taking place.

“I can’t see it happening,” Gripper said. “If King Charles were to travel to the United States, especially with Meghan and Harry residing there, it would inevitably spark an international media frenzy. Even if the meeting wasn’t planned, the world would interpret it as a major diplomatic event.”

Gripper argued that the complexity of such a visit, combined with the lingering tensions between the Sussexes and the Royal Family, makes it highly unlikely. “Would the King make the ‘really difficult’ move of travelling across the world just to meet his grandchildren?” she asked.

Instead, Gripper suggested that the burden should fall on Harry and Meghan to bring their children to the UK. “Can’t the King say, ‘I know it would be helpful for me to come, but it would be really difficult. Why don’t you bring them here? We’ve got plenty of castles, and they’ll love it.’”

King Charles has previously expressed a desire to maintain connections with all his grandchildren, but his relationship with Harry and Meghan remains strained.
