Former South African President’s representation attends alone; hearing postponed amidst requests

Jacob Zuma, former president of South Africa and leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, did not appear for his scheduled virtual disciplinary hearing with the African National Congress (ANC). Instead, ANC stalwart Tony Yengeni, representing Zuma, attended the session on his behalf.

The MK Party announced that Yengeni informed the ANC’s disciplinary committee of Zuma’s desire for a physical hearing and requested a postponement. The ANC declined the physical hearing but agreed to reschedule the proceedings to next week Tuesday.

Zuma’s suspension from the ANC came after he formed and campaigned for the MK Party while still being an ANC member. Despite his leadership in an opposition party, Zuma has expressed his intention to retain his ANC membership, stating previously that he intends to remain a member until his death.

In addition to requesting a physical hearing, Zuma has advocated for the disciplinary proceedings to be open to the public. However, ANC spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi clarified that both the pre-hearing conference and the disciplinary hearing will not be accessible to the public or the media. The committee will announce a verdict once it has reviewed all arguments, with the timeline dependent on the scope of deliberations and issues under consideration.

Earlier in May, the ANC had to cancel Zuma’s disciplinary committee hearing, originally scheduled at Luthuli House, due to security concerns. Reports indicated a high risk of clashes between supporters of the ANC and the MK Party.
