Police shoot suspect after double stabbing leaves two seriously injured in quiet Huyton Street
A man suspected of brutally stabbing two people in broad daylight on a residential street in Huyton, Merseyside, was shot by armed police on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a full-scale investigation and public shock across the local community.
Emergency services rushed to Tobruk Road, a quiet neighbourhood near Liverpool, just after 4.25pm following reports that a man and a woman had been attacked with a knife. Both victims were left with serious injuries.
Merseyside Police confirmed that armed officers were deployed to the scene and confronted the suspect shortly after the initial emergency call. Officers discharged their weapons, shooting the man at the scene.
All three individuals—the male suspect and the two stabbing victims—were transported to hospital. While their conditions are described as serious, all are reported to be in a stable state.
A cordon was quickly erected around the area as officers began house-to-house inquiries and combed CCTV footage to piece together the moments leading up to the bloodshed. Armed response units, detectives, and forensics teams remained at the scene well into the evening.

“This will come as a shock to people in the area,” Speight acknowledged. “We’re doing all we can to support the victims and investigate what happened here.”
Standard procedure dictates that any incident involving police firearms must be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Merseyside Police confirmed they had made the referral, and by 7pm, IOPC investigators had arrived and were attending the force’s post-incident procedures.
An IOPC spokesperson said, “We have begun gathering evidence and opened enquiries into the circumstances of the police shooting. Our investigation is in its early stages and further details will follow.”
No further information has been released regarding the identities or possible motives of the individuals involved. However, early indications suggest a domestic connection may exist between those injured and the suspect, though this has not been confirmed by police.
Locals described the moment the peace was shattered on Tobruk Road, with one witness stating: “We just heard sirens and then shouting. Next thing, the place was swarming with armed police.”
For now, the area remains cordoned off as authorities work to understand the full timeline of the events that led to a police firearm being discharged in a residential neighbourhood—something still rare in Britain.
As darkness fell over Huyton, forensic tents remained pitched on the pavement, a grim reminder of a violent incident that unfolded without warning in the late afternoon calm.
