Dean Deblois returns to direct the live-action remake of his beloved animated franchise, bringing the epic tale of Vikings and dragons to a new generation
DreamWorks has revealed the first teaser for the highly anticipated live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, a reimagining of the beloved animated classic. The film brings back the magic of the original while introducing a fresh perspective, as director Dean DeBlois—who helmed the three animated films—takes the reins once more to deliver a live-action version of his acclaimed story.
Fans of the franchise will recognise from the teaser that much of what made the original film so special remains intact. While the format has shifted to live-action, the core elements of the story, characters, and the bond between Hiccup and Toothless remain faithfully represented. The visual transformation is striking, especially in the depiction of Toothless, who, despite the change in medium, looks just as stunning and majestic as ever.
The cast for the live-action film includes Mason Thames in the role of Hiccup, a young Viking who dares to defy tradition. Thames, known for his roles in The Black Phone and For All Mankind, takes on the challenging role of bringing Hiccup’s inventiveness and vulnerability to life on screen. Gerard Butler reprises his voice role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father and the village chief, anchoring the film with his commanding presence. Other notable cast members include Nico Parker as Astrid, the fierce and ambitious Viking, and Nick Frost as Gobber, the village’s quirky blacksmith. The film also stars Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur.
Set on the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have long been bitter enemies, the story centres around Hiccup, who challenges his society’s views when he befriends a Night Fury dragon named Toothless. Together, they uncover the true nature of dragons, shaking the very foundations of Viking tradition. With the help of his friends—Astrid and Gobber—Hiccup faces the rise of an ancient threat that endangers both dragons and Vikings. As tensions escalate, Hiccup’s bond with Toothless becomes crucial to forging peace between the two warring worlds. Their journey is one of courage, leadership, and breaking down the barriers of fear and misunderstanding.
