Despite record-breaking sales on PlayStation, Helldivers 2 experiences a sharp decline in PC player numbers, dropping to a fraction of its peak

Arrowhead’s acclaimed sci-fi shooter, Helldivers 2, which initially saw tremendous success as PlayStation’s fastest-selling game, has encountered a significant setback on the PC platform. Despite a robust start, the game’s player base on Steam has dwindled drastically, plummeting to just 10% of its peak concurrent players since launch.

As of the latest data, Helldivers 2’s peak player count on Steam has fallen precipitously. Initially reported at 458,709 players, the figure has decreased by 90%, now averaging approximately 41,860 concurrent players over the past 30 days.

The decline on PC contrasts sharply with its continued popularity on PlayStation 5, where the game remains widely played.

The downturn comes amidst a series of setbacks for the game’s publisher, Sony. The company’s mishandling of the PlayStation Network (PSN) earlier in the year led to a wave of negative feedback and forced the game to be withdrawn from sale in 177 countries lacking access to PSN, prompting Sony to reverse its decision.

Recently, an inadvertent leak of an unannounced Helldivers 2 strategy added to the turmoil. Sony mistakenly revealed the Airburst Rocket Launcher, intended for release after completing Operation Legitimate Undertaking on the planet Penta. However, the image accompanying the announcement depicted a weapon not recognized in the game at that time, sparking confusion and frustration among the community.

From an economic viewpoint, Helldivers 2’s decline in PC player base could impact revenue streams associated with microtransactions, DLCs, and ongoing support.
