Sony’s new policy for Helldivers 2 demands PC gamers to link their accounts with PSN, stirring frustration and backlash among the community

PC gamers are facing a new hurdle as Sony introduces a mandatory PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking for playing Helldivers 2 on PC. Initially, this requirement was not part of the game’s setup at its launch on February 8. Now, the change is causing considerable unrest among players.

This new policy targets both new and existing players. Starting May 6, all new players must link their PSN accounts to play. Meanwhile, players who have already been enjoying the game have until June 4 to comply. Sony defends this move as a strategy to combat grief and abusive behaviour by facilitating easier bans for offenders.

Sony attributes the delayed implementation of this policy to technical issues at launch. However, the requirement has disrupted the gaming experience for many, especially those using platforms like Steam Deck, or residing in regions without PSN support.

The backlash has been swift and severe, with many players expressing their dissatisfaction on forums and review platforms. Some have even started a review bombing campaign on Steam, a clear sign of their displeasure. Players are particularly frustrated about the additional steps now required after downloading an 80GB game, with concerns also rising about potential security risks associated with PSN accounts.

Despite the uproar, it is important to recognize the potential benefits of this policy. Linking accounts can indeed help improve community management and security. Furthermore, Sony’s commitment to releasing their titles on PC should not be overlooked. Helldivers 2 itself was available on both PC and PlayStation consoles from day one, a testament to Sony’s promise to its fan base.

As this policy unfolds, it remains to be seen how many players will follow through with their threats to abandon the game, and whether Sony will adjust its strategy in response to the community’s feedback
