Thomas Taylor’s iconic cover illustration for the debut novel fetches the highest price ever for a Harry Potter item

 A watercolour drawing created for the cover of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” has set a new auction record, selling for £1.5 million ($1.9 million) at Sotheby’s in New York. This makes it the most valuable Harry Potter-related item ever sold at auction.

The illustration, crafted by Thomas Taylor for the first edition of the book in 1997, surpassed its pre-sale estimate of $400,000 to $600,000 after a competitive bidding war involving four bidders. The intense battle lasted nearly 10 minutes before the final price was reached.

Previously, the highest price recorded for a Harry Potter item was a first-edition copy of the same book, which sold for $421,000 at Heritage Auctions in Dallas in December 2021.

Taylor, who was only 23 when he illustrated the cover, used concentrated watercolours on cold-pressed watercolour paper, outlined with black Karisma pencil. This was his first professional commission, which he completed in just two days after being approached by Barry Cunningham, the publisher at Bloomsbury. Taylor’s illustration, featuring the young wizard with his signature dark hair, round glasses, and lightning bolt scar, quickly became an iconic image.

The artwork was first auctioned in 2001 at Sotheby’s London when only the first four books in the series had been published. At that time, it was estimated to sell for £20,000 to £25,000 but fetched £85,750.
