Hostage release comes under threat as Israel warns of retaliation; Trump’s Gaza proposal stirs international outcry

Hamas has announced plans to release Israeli hostages on Saturday, following a recent delay attributed to Israel’s alleged ceasefire violations. The militant group did not specify the number of hostages set for release but reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement, including the exchange of captives in accordance with the negotiated timeline.

However, tensions remain high. Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer warned that failure to release at least three hostages as scheduled would lead to the collapse of the deal. “The release of all our hostages is a key war aim,” Mencer stated, underscoring Israel’s stance on the ongoing negotiations.

Ceasefire Under Strain

The latest impasse began Monday when Hamas postponed the scheduled release, accusing Israel of obstructing humanitarian aid, including medical supplies and equipment, from entering Gaza. The delay drew sharp reactions from Israeli officials and international stakeholders.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning, stating that “all hell is going to break out” if Hamas does not adhere to the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered troops to mobilise around Gaza, reinforcing the possibility of renewed military action. Defense Minister Israel Katz echoed these sentiments, asserting that “the gates of hell will open on them, just as the U.S. president promised.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s controversial proposal to “take over” Gaza and relocate its 2 million residents has sparked widespread condemnation. Arab leaders have reacted with outrage, while residents of Gaza express growing fear over their uncertain future.

Fears Over Hostage Conditions

Concerns are mounting over the well-being of Israeli hostages, especially after the frail condition of three captives released last week raised alarms. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum urged swift action, warning, “Time is running out for the hostages.”

With the ceasefire agreement appearing increasingly fragile, all eyes are on Saturday’s planned hostage release, which could determine the fate of the ongoing truce.
