After release from prison, Gypsy aims for the Disney wedding she always dreamt of

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the woman who spent years behind bars for her involvement in the murder of her abusive mother, Dee Dee, is gearing up for a magical fairy tale wedding with teacher Ryan Scott Anderson. Released from prison on December 28 after serving eight-and-a-half years of a 10-year sentence for second-degree murder, Gypsy is determined to turn her life around and create a dream wedding that she was denied while in prison.

The couple initially had a private legal ceremony on July 20, 2022, inside the walls of Chillicothe Correctional Centre in Missouri. However, Gypsy now envisions a “re-do” wedding surrounded by family and friends to celebrate their love. In her first UK interview since her release, she expressed her desire for a classy, fairy tale wedding, describing her dream dress as white, form-fitting, flaring at the bottom, with capped sleeves.

Gypsy’s life took a dark turn when, at the age of 12, she fell ill with cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain. Her mother, Dee Dee, who had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, subjected her to unnecessary medical treatments and made her feign various illnesses, leading Gypsy to a breaking point. In 2015, she assisted her internet boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, in murdering Dee Dee. Gypsy Rose was subsequently sentenced to prison.

Now, with her newfound freedom, Gypsy is eager to embrace a life full of joy and happiness. In the interview, she expressed regret for the decisions made during her difficult past, stating, “I regret the fact I made the decision to end her life as a way out. I’ve come to a place where I feel more sympathy towards my mother, more forgiveness, and more self-forgiveness.”

Gypsy’s journey is set to be explored in a six-part documentary series, The Prison Confessions Of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, exclusively screened by Crime+Investigation starting January 15. In her quest for redemption, Gypsy is rebuilding her life with her husband Ryan by her side and hopes to serve as an advocate for Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

As she focuses on her future, Gypsy reflects on her time in prison as a period of growth, stating, “I don’t see myself as a murderer. I committed a crime, but that doesn’t define who I am. I accept what I’ve done. I paid my dues. Now it’s about reshaping myself as a person. So far, I have enjoyed every single moment of every day I have been free.”
