Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” dominates this year’s Bafta Film Award nominations, boasting an impressive total of 13 nods. Among them is a recognition for Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned theoretical physicist often dubbed the father of the atomic bomb.

Competing closely in the summer box office race, “Barbie” secured five nominations, tying with the cult hit drama “Saltburn.” Meanwhile, “Poor Things” garnered 11 nominations, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” both secured nine each, positioning them as top contenders.

The nomination breakdown stands as follows:

  • 13 – Oppenheimer
  • 11 – Poor Things
  • 9 – Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest
  • 7 – Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro
  • 6 – All of Us Strangers
  • 5 – Barbie and Saltburn

Christopher Nolan’s epic three-hour film, “Oppenheimer,” has already accumulated accolades with eight Critics Choice Awards and five Golden Globes. It competes in multiple categories, including Best Film, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Notably, Robert Downey Jr. is nominated for Best Supporting Role and is considered a frontrunner for an Oscar win.

Despite being the highest-grossing film of 2023 with glowing reviews, “Barbie,” focusing on the doll’s feminist awakening, missed out on a Best Film nomination. Greta Gerwig also failed to secure a Best Director nomination, leaving Justine Triet as the sole female director contender for “Anatomy of a Fall.”

Other notable nominations include Andrew Haigh for “All of Us Strangers” and Jonathan Glazer for “The Zone of Interest.” The latter, a German-language film, is not only up for Outstanding British Film but also Best Adapted Screenplay, delving into the life of a Nazi commandant near Auschwitz.

The Best Actor category features Bradley Cooper, nominated for both his leading role and directorial efforts in “Maestro.” Carey Mulligan, Barry Keoghan, and Rosamund Pike are also recognized for their outstanding performances in various films.

Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller, “Poor Things,” earns nominations for both Best Actress (Emma Stone) and Outstanding British Film. The film explores the resurrection of a woman using the brain of her unborn child.

Notable absences in this year’s nominations include Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone from “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Additionally, the critically acclaimed British film “One Life,” starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, failed to secure a nomination.

The much-anticipated Bafta Film Awards 2024 are scheduled for February 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, with David Tennant set to host the ceremony.
