Former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian vows to continue defending her legacy despite a court’s rejection of her bid to overturn corruption findings

Gladys Berejiklian, the former Premier of New South Wales, has vowed to remain defiant following a decisive court ruling upholding findings of corruption against her. On July 26, 2024, the NSW Court of Appeal dismissed Berejiklian’s challenge to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) findings that she engaged in serious corrupt conduct.

Berejiklian’s appeal sought to overturn the ICAC’s determination that she had breached public trust through a covert relationship with former Liberal colleague Daryl Maguire. The court’s ruling affirmed that ICAC acted within its legal authority and found that Berejiklian’s conduct was indeed corrupt. The findings were based on evidence that Maguire exerted influence on Berejiklian, pressuring her to support his causes, including significant funding allocations for his Wagga Wagga electorate.

Berejiklian resigned as Premier in 2021 when ICAC’s investigation into her conduct became public. She subsequently transitioned to a senior role at Optus, where a spokesperson acknowledged the court’s decision but declined to comment further.
