Fleetwood Mac could reunite for the 50th anniversary of Rumours, with Stevie and Lindsey in talks

Iconic rock band Fleetwood Mac are reportedly in early talks to reunite for the 50th anniversary of their legendary 1977 album Rumours, one of the most successful and influential records in music history.

The possible reunion would bring together surviving members Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, nearly five decades after the release of the album that defined an era and captured the chaos of their intertwined relationships.

According to The Sun, Mick Fleetwood is leading discussions between the bandmates, aiming to organise a major celebration to honour Rumours’ half-century milestone in 2027. Options reportedly include a one-off television special exploring the making of the record and a special re-release of the album through Warner Records.

The reunion would mark an emotional chapter for the group, following the death of Christine McVie in 2022 at the age of 79. McVie, who died after suffering a stroke, was one of Fleetwood Mac’s central creative forces and the writer behind hits such as Songbird and Don’t Stop.

Fleetwood is said to have been quietly encouraging Nicks, Buckingham and McVie to put aside their differences and reunite in Christine’s memory.

Speculation about a possible comeback intensified over the summer when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who were romantically involved in the 1970s, both posted lyrics from their early song Frozen Love on Instagram. Fans were quick to note the timing and the matching lines.

Nicks shared the words: “And if you go forward…” while Buckingham followed with the lyric’s completion: “…I’ll meet you there.”

The posts, which featured handwritten snippets without captions, sent fans into a frenzy, with many interpreting them as a cryptic hint of a reconciliation. “OMG! What does it mean?” one fan asked. Another simply wrote: “Reunion incoming?”

Frozen Love originally appeared on the duo’s 1973 album Buckingham Nicks, recorded before they joined Fleetwood Mac. That album, and their romantic chemistry, helped catch the attention of Mick Fleetwood — leading to their recruitment into the band and the explosive creative tension that powered Rumours.

The album, which included timeless tracks such as Go Your Own Way, Dreams, The Chain and Don’t Stop, became a defining cultural moment of the 1970s. It sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, earning Grammy Awards and cementing Fleetwood Mac as one of the greatest rock acts of all time.

Yet behind the scenes, the band’s success was fuelled by heartbreak, betrayal and addiction. Nicks and Buckingham’s breakup, Christine and John McVie’s divorce, and Mick Fleetwood’s own personal struggles were all playing out as they recorded Rumours — an album that turned private pain into public art.

Despite multiple fallouts and lineup changes over the years, Fleetwood Mac have periodically reunited for tours, most notably in 2014 when Christine McVie returned to the stage after a 16-year absence. However, Buckingham’s exit in 2018, amid tensions with Nicks, appeared to end hopes of another full reunion.

If the band do come together again, it would be the first time the core members have shared a project since then — and possibly the last.

A source quoted by The Sun said, “Mick has always been the glue that holds them together. He believes there’s unfinished business, and what better way to honour Christine than to reunite for Rumours’ 50th anniversary?”

Warner Records is reportedly already preparing a deluxe edition of Rumours for 2027, complete with never-before-heard material, remastered recordings and new interviews with surviving members.

While nothing has been confirmed by the band, fans are hopeful. As one commenter put it beneath Nicks’ post: “If this means Fleetwood Mac are coming back — we’re ready.”
