European airline’s new procedure aims to enhance aircraft safety and accuracy of weight calculations

Finnair, a prominent European airline, has sparked debate by implementing a novel practice of weighing passengers alongside their carry-on luggage before boarding flights, a move intended to refine aircraft weight estimations and enhance safety protocols.

This unprecedented initiative, introduced at Helsinki Airport from February through April-May, offers passengers the option to volunteer for the weigh-in process, contributing to a comprehensive assessment of the aircraft’s total weight prior to take-off.

According to Kaisa Tikkanen, Finnair’s spokesperson, over 500 passengers have participated in the voluntary weigh-ins since the program’s inception, underscoring the airline’s commitment to meticulous safety measures and operational efficiency.

The airline emphasizes that collected data, which encompasses various factors such as fuel weight, cargo, and passenger demographics, including class of travel, gender, and age, is meticulously safeguarded and anonymized, with no linkage to personal information.

“While this initiative may initially provoke concerns, it aligns with Finnair’s steadfast commitment to ensuring the utmost safety and accuracy in flight operations,” stated Satu Munnukka, head of ground processes at Finnair, reassuring passengers of the confidentiality and integrity of the process.
