Parents of Adriana Kuch Sue Central Regional High School for failing to prevent bullying culture

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the family of Adriana Kuch, who took her own life a year ago, is suing Central Regional High School, alleging the institution’s failure to address bullying and protect the 14-year-old from emotional distress.

Adriana, a student at Bayville-based Central Regional High School, tragically ended her life in February 2023, following a reported assault by four students. The attack, recorded by fellow students and circulated online, led to charges against the assailants.

The family’s civil complaint claims that the school had a ‘culture and climate of harassment, intimidation, and bullying,’ accusing it of neglecting its duty to supervise, monitor, and train staff regarding such issues. The lawsuit further contends that the school failed to develop effective anti-harassment policies consistent with New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Statute.

Named in the suit are Central Regional High School Principal Irene Marousis, Assistant Principals Darryl Heale and Angelo Mazzuca, Anti-Bullying Coordinator Thomas Gallahue, and Anti-Bullying Specialist Jennifer Mullins.

Adriana’s father, Michael Kuch, has criticized the school’s handling of the assault, emphasizing the need for a safe and secure environment for students. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, although specific amounts are not specified.

The legal action, filed on January 26, has yet to be served to Central Regional High School, according to superintendent Michelle CarneyRay-Yoder. She stated that the school cannot comment at this time, citing the pending litigation as a limiting factor.

This tragic incident sheds light on the profound consequences of unchecked bullying within educational institutions, prompting Adriana’s grieving family to seek justice and accountability for the loss of their daughter.
