Authorities stress the importance of road cleaning and collaborative efforts to combat air pollution and smog in Punjab

In response to the growing smog crisis in Punjab, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued new guidelines urging citizens to take precautionary measures, including wearing face masks, to protect themselves from harmful dust pollution. Zafar Iqbal, the Additional Director General (DG) of Environment Multan at EPA Punjab, highlighted that dust pollution is a significant contributor to the thick smog enveloping the region. He emphasized the role of citizens in mitigating the effects of smog and suggested that face masks can serve as an effective protective measure, particularly in areas with high pollution levels.

Iqbal also outlined a range of proactive steps being taken by the Punjab government to tackle the worsening air quality. On the directions of Chief Minister Punjab, the EPA has initiated road cleaning and watering procedures aimed at reducing dust pollution. These measures are part of the broader effort to improve air quality and address smog-related health risks in the province.

As part of the province’s strategy to combat smog, the Punjab government has also launched several policies, including the “Policy and Action Plan for Control, Mitigation, Advisory, and Protective Measures in Extreme Weather Conditions of Dense Smog in Punjab.” These efforts are designed to reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of smog during the region’s smog-prone months.

One of the bold initiatives under the plan is the implementation of a “Green Lockdown” in Lahore, which aims to limit industrial activities and reduce vehicular emissions to improve air quality. These actions align with the government’s long-term strategy to address the environmental and health risks posed by smog.

The EPA also stressed the importance of collective action in combating air pollution. Iqbal called for greater cooperation between the business community, vendors, shopkeepers, and citizens. By working together, these groups can help create a cleaner, healthier environment and contribute to the larger goal of smog reduction.

To further address smog and pollution, the Punjab government is intensifying enforcement of environmental laws targeting industries and the transportation sector, with a focus on curbing emissions of toxic substances and particulate matter.

As smog continues to be a serious issue for the region, the government urges all stakeholders to collaborate in tackling the environmental challenges and fostering a cleaner, healthier future for the people of Punjab.
