Iconic Pundit announces departure after 27 glorious years

In a surprising turn of events, football legend Ian Wright, a fixture on Match of the Day (MOTD) for 27 years, has declared that the current season will mark his final stint on the beloved BBC show.

The Arsenal icon, who made his MOTD debut in 1997 while still an active player, has been a consistent presence alongside hosts Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Alan Shearer since his retirement from professional football.

Wright took to social media on Sunday to share the news, posting a heartfelt statement that resonates with his deep connection to MOTD: “After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I’ll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season.”

Expressing his gratitude, Wright emphasized the show’s significance in his life: “I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world.”

“MOTD is my Holy Grail. On my first-ever show, I told Des Lynam, ‘This is my Graceland.’ It will always be my Graceland, and I will always be watching.”

The decision, Wright revealed, had been looming for some time, and while acknowledging his great friends and cherished memories, he expressed the need to explore different avenues on Saturdays.

Wright, who retired from professional football in 2000, became a pundit two years later and enjoyed two distinct spells on MOTD—from 2002 to 2008 and a comeback in 2015.

Head of BBC Sport content Philip Bernie acknowledged Wright’s immense contribution: “Ian has been a wonderful star player on MOTD since his first appearance over 20 years ago. His insight, wit, and warmth have richly entertained and informed all those watching him. We will miss his unique style and presence when he goes at the end of this season, but we will be sure to give him the send-off he deserves.”

An emotional Lineker and Shearer bid farewell on social media, acknowledging Wright’s impact on and off the screen. Piers Morgan congratulated him on a magnificent run, emphasizing Wright’s smart analysis, passion, and mischievous laugh.

Wright’s departure marks the end of an era on MOTD, leaving behind a legacy that fans, colleagues, and football enthusiasts alike will undoubtedly cherish.
