Emeril John Lagasse Jr., the father of celebrated New Orleans chef Emeril Lagasse, passed away this week at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy cherished by both his family and the culinary community. Known to loved ones as “Mr. John,” his journey from the textile industry to a pivotal role in his son’s restaurant empire marks a life of enduring work ethic and family values.

Relocating to New Orleans in 1992, two years after his son opened the iconic Emeril’s in the Warehouse District, Lagasse Jr. became an integral part of the burgeoning restaurant company. His death on March 21 was announced by his son Emeril Lagasse on Facebook, symbolically honouring his father’s work ethic with a photo tribute. A World War II veteran, Lagasse Jr.’s early career spanned 40 years in the textile industry before he joined his son’s venture into the culinary world, demonstrating that it’s never too late to embark on a new chapter.

Lagasse Jr. leaves behind a family that includes two sons, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, all of whom share in the legacy of his remarkable life. Though his funeral service will be held privately, the family encourages donations in his memory to the Emeril Foundation, benefiting St. Michael’s school, as a way to continue his legacy of giving and support.
