Citing new California law on school transgender notification policies, Musk relocates operations to Texas
Elon Musk revealed on Tuesday that he will relocate the headquarters of his companies, X and SpaceX, from California to Texas. The announcement came after California enacted a law banning school policies that require parental notification if a student wishes to change their pronouns or identifies as transgender.
In a post on Twitter/X, Musk described this legislation as the “last straw,” asserting that such laws are harmful to both families and businesses. “This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk wrote. He later added, “And X HQ will move to Austin … Many will follow.”
The new law, signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, aims to protect the privacy of transgender students. Musk, however, criticized the legislation, suggesting it undermines parental rights. “The state will take away your kids in California,” he added in a subsequent post on X.
Although Musk’s decision to relocate seems abrupt, previous reports indicated that he might have been considering moving the headquarters of X before the bill was signed. Governor Newsom did not comment directly on Musk’s decision but criticized Musk’s recent support of Donald Trump in a tweet on Tuesday.
