A 36-year-old man is in custody following a violent incident near Hainault underground station; the incident is not believed to be terror-related

In a horrifying episode of violence in an East London suburb, a 36-year-old man armed with a sword has been arrested after allegedly killing a 13-year-old boy and injuring four others. The attack occurred early Tuesday morning near Hainault underground station, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident began just before 7 a.m. with reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in Thurlow Gardens. Subsequently, there were reports of multiple stabbings in the vicinity. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was apprehended by police who used a Taser in the arrest. Authorities have stated that the incident does not appear to be related to terrorism.

“Everyone will want to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, and we aim to provide answers as soon as we are able,” said Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan. The community remains in shock as the investigation continues.

The assault resulted in two Metropolitan Police officers and two civilians being hospitalized with significant, though non-life-threatening, injuries. All four are reported to need surgical intervention due to stab wounds received during the attack.

Eyewitness accounts describe a tense scene where police were seen chasing the suspect, who was reportedly clad in a yellow hoodie and armed with a long blade. Witnesses recounted hearing officers repeatedly commanding the suspect to drop his weapon.

The attack drew immediate attention from the highest levels of government, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemning the violence. “Such violence has no place on our streets,” Sunak stated, expressing his shock over the events.

Transport for London has temporarily closed the Hainault underground station to facilitate the ongoing police investigation. Officials urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they continue to piece together the events that led to this tragic morning in London.
