Earth to welcome temporary mini-moon: Asteroid 2024 PT5 to make a brief visit

This month, a tiny asteroid will become Earth’s second moon for just two months before returning to its home in the asteroid belt.

This September, Earth is set to gain a temporary moon in the form of the small asteroid known as 2024 PT5. Unlike our permanent lunar companion, which has orbited Earth for approximately 4 billion years, this mini-moon will grace our skies for a fleeting two-month period before resuming its journey in the asteroid belt.

A team of scientists specializing in the study of mini-moon events identified the upcoming capture of 2024 PT5. They regularly monitor newly discovered celestial objects for unusual behaviours, and the unique dynamics of this asteroid caught their attention.

Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, a professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the lead author of the research, explained that 2024 PT5 belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt. This secondary asteroid belt is made up of space rocks that follow orbits similar to Earth’s, positioned around 93 million miles (150 million kilometres) from the Sun.

Asteroids in the Arjuna belt can approach Earth closely, sometimes within 2.8 million miles (4.5 million kilometres), travelling at speeds of approximately 2,200 miles per hour (3,540 kilometres per hour). Under these specific conditions, the gravitational forces can change, allowing the asteroid to temporarily become a moon of Earth. Marcos noted that this process will begin next week and will last for about two months, though 2024 PT5 won’t complete a full orbit around our planet.

Marcos likened the situation to shopping behaviour: “If a true satellite is like a customer buying goods inside a store, objects like 2024 PT5 are window shoppers.” This analogy highlights the transient nature of this mini-moon, emphasizing that while it will orbit Earth for a brief time, it is not a permanent fixture.

As 2024 PT5 approaches, astronomers are eager to observe this rare celestial event, which provides a unique opportunity to study the characteristics of near-Earth objects.
