Djokovic overcomes teen challenger with Djokovic Murray partnership in coaching box

Novak Djokovic made a winning start to his Australian Open campaign, rallying from a set down to defeat 19-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. This victory marked Djokovic’s first match with three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in his coaching box, a partnership that has caught the attention of the tennis world.

The 37-year-old Serbian legend, chasing his record-extending 11th Australian Open title and a historic 25th Grand Slam crown, expressed excitement about his new collaboration. “It’s a bit surreal to have Andy courtside after competing against him for over two decades,” Djokovic remarked. “But it’s great to have him on my side of the net, and he’s already made a difference.”

Murray, known for his fiery on-court demeanour during his playing career, maintained a composed presence in Djokovic’s coaching pod. This new Australian Open feature allows coaches to offer courtside advice, and Murray’s influence was evident throughout the match. Sitting alongside Djokovic’s team, Murray provided calm encouragement and strategic input, particularly during a pivotal chat before the fourth set.

In the opening set, Djokovic struggled to find his rhythm, uncharacteristically dropping crucial points and allowing the fearless Basavareddy to secure a break of serve. The teenager, whose head coach at Stanford University is none other than Paul Goldstein—the last player to defeat Djokovic in the first round of a Grand Slam back in 2006—displayed no signs of nervousness.

Basavareddy, an avid admirer of Djokovic, showcased maturity beyond his years as he seized the first set. However, the young American began to show signs of fatigue and cramping as the match progressed. Djokovic capitalised, reducing errors and dominating the second and third sets with characteristic precision.

Before the fourth set, Murray appeared to offer advice on Djokovic’s backhand, a move that proved pivotal. Djokovic cruised through the final set, sealing the win with a blend of powerful baseline shots and clinical finishing.

Reflecting on the experience, Djokovic praised Murray’s contributions. “He gave me great advice during the match. The feedback exchange has been fantastic, and I hope we can build on this success.”

This win marks a strong start for Djokovic in Melbourne, where he remains seeded seventh. His next challenge is Portugal’s Jaime Faria in the second round.

For Basavareddy, the match was a valuable learning experience against one of the greatest players in tennis history. While he fell short, his fearless performance hints at a promising future.

Djokovic’s partnership with Murray has already sparked intrigue, and as the Australian Open unfolds, all eyes will remain on the duo as they navigate this new chapter together.
