Hollywood legend scolds photographer over arm grab before emotional lifetime honour at Cannes premiere.

Denzel Washington made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival after confronting a photographer during a tense red carpet moment—just hours before receiving a surprise lifetime achievement Palme d’Or.

The 70-year-old Oscar-winning actor was attending the premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, his latest project directed by longtime collaborator Spike Lee, when the incident unfolded. While posing with co-star A$AP Rocky, Washington was tapped on the arm by a photographer—prompting the actor to whirl around, point directly at the man and firmly say, “Stop it!”

Despite the photographer’s attempt to downplay the incident with a smile, Washington was visibly irritated by the unsolicited contact. At one point, footage appears to show the photographer gripping Washington’s arm, a move many online called invasive.

Social media quickly erupted in support of the veteran star. “You can clearly see Denzel say ‘do not put your hands on me’ and then the guy does it again. What a clown,” one user posted on X. Another wrote, “Idk what happened but I know Denzel is in the right.” Others sympathised with the demands placed on celebrities, with one fan commenting, “These folks are around people all day grabbing at them… I’d react the same.”

Though momentarily jarring, the incident didn’t overshadow the night’s unexpected celebration. Washington, on a brief break from his stage run as Othello in New York, was stunned to receive the honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement. The award, which had not been announced in advance, was presented by Spike Lee in a surprise ceremony inside the Palais des Festivals.

“This is my brother, right here,” Lee said as he handed Washington the iconic golden palm. The actor, visibly emotional, held up the trophy to the applauding audience and said, “This is a total surprise for me!”

Washington’s appearance in Highest 2 Lowest marks his return to the big screen in a modern adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s classic 1963 film High and Low. The reimagined crime thriller has been produced by Apple and A24, with a cinema release slated for 22 August, followed by an Apple TV+ launch on 5 September.

The film also stars Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky, who joined Washington on the Cannes carpet. The project remained off the official Cannes lineup until the eleventh hour, adding to the intrigue around its unveiling.

Despite the early flare-up, Washington appeared to relax as the evening progressed. Later, he was seen calmly exchanging an object—possibly a pen or lens cap—with a different photographer, suggesting the earlier tension had subsided.

Nevertheless, the brief confrontation reignited debates about boundaries and celebrity privacy, particularly at highly choreographed public events like Cannes. While red carpets are designed for media interaction, many fans defended Washington’s reaction, stressing that personal space should be respected—even in the world of stardom.

The episode adds a layer of real-life tension to a night that already carried cinematic weight. With the spotlight firmly back on Highest 2 Lowest and Washington’s legendary status reaffirmed by Cannes, the veteran actor once again proved he knows how to command a scene—both on and off the screen.
