Just weeks after her breakup with Chris Martin, Dakota Johnson escapes to Europe with Kate Hudson

Just weeks after news broke of her quiet split from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, the Material Girl star has been spotted living it up on a European getaway with long-time family friend Kate Hudson. The duo—Hollywood royalty in their own right—were first seen dining in Rome on 28 June alongside Dakota’s agent Maha Dakhil and entrepreneur Douglas Chabbott. Their lively dinner even featured a surprise appearance by Ricky Martin, who popped over from a neighbouring restaurant just to say hello.

Days later, the pair set sail off the coast of Ibiza, Spain, where they were photographed lounging in bikinis on a plush white raft, swimming, and soaking up the sun with a friend. The radiant trip, shared in exclusive photos by People, marked a high-spirited turn for Dakota, who has remained publicly silent since the breakup.

Dakota, 35, and Chris, 48, had been together for nearly eight years, making them one of the more private and enduring couples in Hollywood. Rumours of a split had circulated in the spring, but were quashed by their reps at the time. The breakup was confirmed weeks later, though neither party has directly commented. The last time they were seen together in public was at a yoga studio, leaving many fans stunned by the separation.

While they were famously tight-lipped, glimpses into their romance surfaced over the years. Chris, who shares two children—Apple, 21, and Moses, 19—with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, kept his relationship with Dakota under wraps, mirroring her approach. “We both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cosy and private,” Dakota told Elle in 2021.

Their low-key lifestyle included cohabiting in a $12.5 million Malibu home and creative collaborations like the 2020 Coldplay music video “Cry, Cry, Cry,” directed by Dakota. Chris once dedicated the band’s hit song My Universe to her during a live concert, pointing to her in the crowd and declaring, “She’s here.”

Their love story began in late 2017, when Dakota was spotted at a Coldplay concert. Quiet confirmations followed—a hand-holding moment at a fashion event, matching tattoos, and joint getaways to Spain. They celebrated birthdays, walked red carpets (separately), and attended each other’s work milestones.

But this summer, Dakota seems to be turning the page. Her sun-drenched escape with Kate Hudson—whose mother, Goldie Hawn, is a close friend of Dakota’s mum, Melanie Griffith—is as much a statement of joy as it is of independence.

The images from Ibiza show two women unapologetically embracing the moment: hair wet, smiles wide, with the freedom that comes from letting go. The trip may be glamorous, but it carries an undertone of solidarity—two daughters of Hollywood finding peace, purpose, and perhaps a little perspective in each other’s company.

Neither Dakota nor Chris has offered a public explanation for the breakup. And in true Dakota fashion, she may never do so. For now, she’s making waves in the water, not the tabloids.
