Council tax shock: Millions of Brits bracing for £100 monthly hike as huge changes loom

Levelling up department greenlights potential 5% rise, triggering financial concerns among households

As spring approaches, households in the UK are bracing themselves for another financial hit, with a potential five per cent surge in Council Tax. The move, expected to result in a £100 monthly increase, comes amid a deepening financial crisis affecting town halls nationwide.

The Levelling Up Department is reportedly leaning towards approving a maximum tax hike of 4.99 per cent from April, granting councils the authority to implement this substantial increase. Any escalation beyond this limit would necessitate approval through local referendums.

This looming adjustment follows Michael Gove’s recent unveiling of an additional £600 million local government bailout, a response to the prevailing challenges faced by councils grappling with inflation and managerial shortcomings.

Labour has been quick to criticize the government, accusing it of merely “papering over the cracks” in addressing the escalating financial concerns faced by households.

Notably, the potential increase in Council Tax bills is expected to impact households significantly, particularly those falling under the typical band D category. According to insights from the Guardian, an approximate £100 surge is likely to be witnessed in their monthly Council Tax bills.

It’s essential to note that millions of residents will enjoy a temporary relief from a key household bill for the upcoming two months, starting in February. The standard practice of paying council tax over ten months instead of twelve translates to a 60-day period where residents paying in ten installments won’t be required to make payments.

As the financial landscape undergoes shifts and households prepare for potential economic strains, the looming Council Tax changes raise questions about the broader impact on the daily lives and budgets of millions across the country.
