Cocoa’s heart-protecting benefits: New study reveals potential to lower blood pressure and cholesterol

Research highlights cocoa’s potential health benefits, emphasizing its role in reducing cardiovascular risk markers

Recent research has unveiled promising findings regarding cocoa, a key component in chocolate, suggesting it may hold significant heart-protecting benefits. Conducted by multiple trials and published in the Nutrients journal, this meta-study analyzed 31 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 2,000 participants. The focus was on tracking various cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Participants were divided into two groups based on cocoa consumption levels. One group comprising 1,110 participants consumed cocoa extract or dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or higher for a minimum of four weeks. The control group, consisting of 876 individuals, consumed placebos, white, or milk chocolate containing less than 70% cocoa. Most participants had pre-existing health conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and elevated cholesterol levels.

The study observed significant improvements among those consuming higher cocoa content. Results indicated an average reduction of 8.35 mg/dL in total cholesterol, 4.91 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose, and 2.52 mmHg in systolic blood pressure, along with a 1.58 mmHg decrease in diastolic blood pressure. These findings underscored cocoa’s potential to mitigate major cardiometabolic risk markers crucial for reducing cardiovascular risks.
