The beloved capybara from Hoo Zoo is back home after a week-long escape into nearby woodland.

Cinnamon, the capybara who made headlines with her daring escape from Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in Telford, has been safely captured and returned to her enclosure. The large rodent had gone missing after breaking free from her habitat on Friday, September 13, prompting a community-wide search.

On the afternoon of her rescue, Cinnamon was discovered enjoying a swim in a pond located within a conservation area near the zoo. Despite her initial tranquillity, the rescue operation was anything but simple. Will Dorrell, the owner of Hoo Zoo, recounted the challenges faced by the zoo team. “I’d love to say it was nice and easy getting her out of the pond but it wasn’t. Several of us got very wet,” he noted, explaining that they had to wade into the water to coax her into a cage.

Cinnamon’s adventure captured the attention of local and international audiences, especially as she appeared to thrive in her temporary woodland home, foraging for food and enjoying the lush vegetation. The zoo’s team had utilized drones and thermal imaging to track her movements, and despite setting live traps along her known routes, Cinnamon skillfully evaded capture, further complicating the search efforts.

The public response to her escape was overwhelming, with many expressing concern and excitement for the capybara’s safe return. “We’re absolutely delighted to have Cinnamon back at the zoo,” Dorrell said. “The public reaction has been astounding, and we’re grateful for everyone who helped ensure her safe return.”

After spending time with her twin brother, Churro, in a safe enclosure, Cinnamon is now acclimatizing back to zoo life. Although she appeared to be in good health following her adventure, a veterinary check-up is scheduled in the coming days. For the weekend, the team will monitor her closely, keeping her out of public view to ensure a smooth transition back to her routine.

Cinnamon’s escape and subsequent rescue highlights not only the adventurous spirit of capybaras, the largest rodents in the world but also the strong bond between the animals and their caretakers at Hoo Zoo. The team remains hopeful that Cinnamon will soon rejoin her family in their paddock, bringing joy to both her and the zoo’s visitors.
