Jin, the oldest member of BTS, finishes 18-month military duty, marking a milestone for the K-pop group

Jin, the eldest member of the globally renowned K-pop sensation BTS, has completed his mandatory military service after serving 18 months. Born Kim Seok-jin, Jin bid farewell to his duties at the 5th Army Infantry Division’s base in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi province, where he appeared emotional while embracing colleagues in uniform.

The 31-year-old star, who put his music career on hold for national service, expressed his mixed feelings during a heartfelt livestream on the Weverse platform, garnering over three million views. “I cried during the ceremony,” Jin shared, reflecting on his service. “But it was so fun for the last year and six months.”

His discharge was celebrated by fellow BTS members, including RM, who greeted Jin with a rendition of their hit single “Dynamite” on a saxophone.

Jin was the first BTS member to enlist, beginning his service in December 2022. The remaining four members commenced their duties in December 2023, with plans to reunite as a group in 2025 after completing their service obligations.

To mark his return to civilian life, Jin intends to host a celebratory event in Seoul, where he will engage with fans and possibly perform. BTS, formed in 2013, has achieved global stardom and is recognized as a cultural ambassador for South Korea, particularly through its impact on the global popularity of K-pop.
