Yellow alerts across the nation as freezing temperatures threaten mass disruption
The United Kingdom is gearing up for an Arctic blast as the Met Office issues urgent warnings of snow and ice set to blanket various regions in the coming week. Yellow alerts have been sounded, predicting a plummet in temperatures below zero, causing concern for widespread disruption.
Forecasters at the Met Office have released maps detailing when and where snow flurries are expected, with warnings in place until Thursday at midnight. The cold snap is projected to hit Scotland from Sunday onwards, extending down the North West coast and into North Wales from Tuesday. Northern Ireland is also included in the warning, starting from Monday.
As the week progresses, a significant snow and ice warning spans from the Shetland Islands to parts of central Wales on Tuesday. The alert continues on Wednesday and Thursday, covering similar areas of the UK, slightly further south.
A spokesperson for the Met Office highlighted, “Brisk northerly winds will drive showers well inland across Northern Ireland on Monday, with these initially falling as snow over higher ground and sleet and rain elsewhere. However, as increasingly cold air spreads south, showers will fall as snow to all levels during the day. Up to 5cm of snow is likely over higher routes with a few cms also expected at lower levels.”
The wintry weather, with its potential to cause widespread disruption, follows the chaos caused by Storm Henk earlier this month, resulting in flooding and evacuations. The Met Office warns of “uncertainty” ahead regarding who might witness the white stuff, with as much as eight inches of snow expected in certain parts of the UK.
As Britain braces for the Arctic onslaught, issues on the road and potential power cuts are anticipated. The forecast indicates a challenging week ahead, emphasizing the need for residents to stay informed and prepared for the impending wintry conditions. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving weather situation.
