Birmingham’s inner city communities are facing growing challenges around health, wellbeing, safety and social isolation. In response, Transforming Pathways CIC has been established with a clear mission to empower residents and deliver inclusive, practical solutions—particularly for women from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
The organisation was created after listening closely to local residents who expressed the need for culturally sensitive, accessible services that could bring people together and promote healthier living. From those conversations came a range of initiatives designed not only to address daily struggles but also to build long-term resilience in some of the city’s most disadvantaged areas.
Weekly wellbeing sessions provide safe spaces for people to talk openly, share experiences and build confidence through peer support. Eating healthier workshops give families the knowledge and skills to make nutritious choices without stretching household budgets, helping them make realistic improvements to their diet. Alongside this, self-defence classes allow women to feel safer and more confident in their daily lives, while exercise programmes support both physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
For director Umair Khan, the drive to launch Transforming Pathways came from what he witnessed first-hand in Birmingham’s neighbourhoods. “I saw the challenges in local areas such as Sparkhill, where issues of health, safety, and isolation affect people every day. It was clear that something needed to be done, and that’s why we launched Transforming Pathways CIC—to provide services that empower and uplift our communities.”

The impact of these efforts is already visible, with participants describing the programmes as vital. One local resident explained: “Services like this are so important for our area. For women from BAME backgrounds, it’s not always easy to find spaces where we feel comfortable and supported. Transforming Pathways gives us that opportunity, and it’s something the community really needs.”
What sets the initiative apart is its commitment to constant dialogue with the people it serves. By keeping community voices at the centre, the organisation ensures programmes stay relevant and meaningful rather than imposed from outside. This adaptability allows the group to respond quickly to evolving challenges, whether they concern health, safety or social connection.
Transforming Pathways CIC is not just focused on immediate solutions but also on creating a stronger foundation for the future. Its ambition is to foster a healthier, safer and more connected Birmingham where women and families can thrive. By addressing barriers that often leave residents feeling isolated, and by offering opportunities that build confidence and wellbeing, the organisation hopes to shift the dynamic in communities that have long struggled with deprivation and exclusion.
The progress so far has highlighted both the need for and the power of grassroots initiatives. While public services often lack the resources or cultural reach to meet every need, small-scale organisations such as Transforming Pathways can step in to fill gaps and rebuild trust. In doing so, they not only deliver practical services but also inspire a sense of hope that change is possible when communities work together.
Birmingham is a city known for its diversity, energy and resilience, but many of its neighbourhoods continue to face daily struggles. Transforming Pathways CIC has emerged as a reminder that real progress begins with listening, responding and giving people the tools to shape their own futures. As the organisation grows, its vision is clear: to ensure no one feels left behind and that every resident has the chance to live healthier, safer and more connected lives.
