Billions in bombs and warplanes to Israel raise concerns over civilian safety in Gaza

The Biden administration has sanctioned a significant military aid package to Israel, consisting of bombs and fighter jets, amidst escalating tensions with Gaza. This move has sparked concerns over potential civilian casualties in southern Gaza, straining U.S.-Israel relations.

Officials from the Pentagon and State Department disclosed the authorization of over 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK82 500-pound bombs, underscoring the magnitude of the military support. This decision comes at a time when Washington expresses apprehensions about a possible Israeli military operation in Gaza.

A State Department official emphasized the procedural nature of such authorizations, which could entail numerous Foreign Military Sales cases over many years. This approach aligns with major procurements, such as Israel’s F-35 program, which unfolds over several cases across many years.

General Charles Q. Brown Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, noted that Israel has not received all the military arms requested in its ongoing conflict with Hamas. The limitation stems from the U.S.’s inability or unwillingness to provide certain requested equipment.

This military assistance announcement occurs as the Biden administration voices concerns over Israel’s conduct in the Gaza conflict. The war has led to significant casualties and displacement among Gaza’s residents, governed by Hamas.

The aid to Israel has been contentious within the U.S., with some Democrats urging President Biden to withhold aid unless Israel commits to measures minimizing civilian casualties in Gaza. This stance has caused friction in U.S.-Israeli relations, further evidenced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelling a Washington delegation visit following the U.S.’s refusal to veto a UN Security Council resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release.

Progressive elements within the U.S. have expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s support for Israel, notably during a high-profile fundraiser in New York City, where pro-Palestinian protesters demanded an end to Israeli aid.
