From next month, certain devices will lose the ability to download shows for offline viewing on BBC IPlayer, prompting frustration among users

The BBC has announced a significant change to its iPlayer service, affecting a popular feature that allows users to download shows for offline viewing—a move that has left many UK viewers reevaluating their TV-watching habits.

The feature, cherished by numerous users for its convenience, enables individuals to download their favourite BBC TV shows onto their devices, facilitating offline viewing, particularly useful during flights, long journeys, or in areas with poor internet connectivity.

However, starting March 11, the BBC will discontinue this option for Windows-powered PCs and Apple’s MacBook devices. The decision comes as a result of the closure of the Desktop Downloads App, with existing downloads accessible until April 8, 2024.

According to the corporation, users can still download content on their mobile devices and utilize the “Watchlist” feature to save programs for later viewing, ensuring uninterrupted access to BBC content on smartphones and tablets.

This change primarily impacts Windows PCs, including those operating on Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as various Apple MacBook models, such as MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBooks.

The decision has triggered frustration among some users, with concerns raised about the loss of a valuable feature. One user, Jo, expressed disappointment, highlighting the importance of offline viewing due to unreliable internet access.

While the move may inconvenience users accustomed to downloading shows on affected devices, the BBC aims to maintain accessibility and convenience for viewers through alternative platforms like smartphones and tablets, ensuring uninterrupted access to BBC programming.

As of April 8, users of the impacted devices will no longer be able to utilize the BBC iPlayer Downloads app for offline viewing. However, those using smartphones and tablets can continue enjoying their favourite BBC shows by downloading them directly through the iPlayer app
