Baldur’s gate 3 miniatures flop: WizKids offers refunds after quality outcry

WizKids takes complaints seriously over poor-quality Baldur’s Gate 3 miniatures

Board game manufacturer WizKids has publicly apologised and offered full refunds after widespread criticism of its recent Baldur’s Gate 3 miniature set, which fans have labelled “melty-faced monstrosities” far removed from the detailed artwork originally promised.

The Dungeons & Dragons: Icons Of The Realms: Baldur’s Gate 3 boxed set, retailing for around £50/$49.99, was announced late last year and began shipping to customers in the US earlier this month. The set features seven characters from Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed 2023 RPG, including Shadowheart, Astarion, Karlach, Gale, Wyll, Lae’zel and Withers.

However, instead of the crisp, detailed sculpts showcased in promotional images, buyers received pre-painted miniatures that fans quickly compared to the infamous botched restoration of the Borja church fresco, distorted and unrecognisable. The resulting backlash led to a flood of complaints and social media posts displaying the disappointing figures.

In response, WizKids admitted that the product “missed the mark” and assured customers they are treating the complaints “seriously.” The company’s website states:

“As a company, WizKids seeks to create products that enhance and add to the enjoyment of gameplay… Unfortunately, we missed the mark on this goal with the D&D Icons of the Realms: Baldur’s Gate 3 Character Boxed Set.”

WizKids is offering full refunds to those who purchased directly from their online stores. Customers who bought the set via third-party retailers are encouraged to seek refunds through those retailers. The company also promises replacements that will meet expected quality standards and urges customers to contact them via their website.

The statement concluded with an apology for the “frustration and disappointment” caused, noting that even WizKids and their partner Wizards of the Coast were dissatisfied with the final product’s quality. They emphasised ongoing efforts to investigate and prevent similar issues in future productions.

This misstep is an unfortunate coda to Baldur’s Gate 3, which has enjoyed widespread acclaim since its release. With Larian Studios’ development work now mostly complete following April’s substantial Patch 8, the franchise’s future—and its merchandise—is in the hands of Hasbro, owners of Dungeons & Dragons.

Though Hasbro has confirmed its intent to commission a Baldur’s Gate 4, Larian is focused on other projects, leaving fans hoping that future licensed products will better honour the beloved RPG’s rich characters and artistry.
