Government invests in advanced US missiles to enhance naval capabilities, citing the greatest arms race since World War II
Australia has officially entered into a significant $7 billion agreement to procure advanced missiles from the United States, a move underscored by the government’s commitment to bolstering its military capabilities in response to escalating regional tensions. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy announced the deal from Washington DC, confirming its approval by the US Congress.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Royal Australian Navy will receive hundreds of SM-2 IIIC and SM-6 long-range missiles, enhancing its ability to engage various targets, including land, sea, and air threats. The SM-6 missile boasts an impressive range of approximately 350 kilometres, while the SM-2 IIIC can strike targets up to 160 kilometres away. Notably, the SM-6 missile was successfully tested on an Australian warship last year, marking a significant milestone as the first successful test conducted by a country outside the United States.
This acquisition aligns with the Australian government’s National Defence Strategy and follows an independent review of the navy’s surface fleet, which highlighted the urgent need for modernisation and enhanced capabilities in light of evolving military challenges. Minister Conroy emphasised the importance of this deal, stating that it reflects Australia’s commitment to strengthening its defence posture amid what he termed the “greatest arms race since World War II.”
