Liverpool manager Arne Slot could face an extended touchline ban after post-match protests at Everton

Arne Slot may receive an extended touchline ban following his red card at Goodison Park, as the Football Association considers multiple disciplinary actions after a fiery Merseyside derby.

Slot was one of four individuals dismissed by referee Michael Oliver after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Everton. Unlike Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucouré, who face automatic suspensions, Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, are currently eligible to remain on the bench for Liverpool’s clash with Wolves on Sunday.

However, the FA is awaiting Oliver’s match report before deciding whether to charge Slot with misconduct. If charged, he could face either a standard penalty or a non-standard charge requiring a disciplinary hearing. Given that he previously served a touchline ban in December for accumulating three yellow cards, a harsher punishment—potentially two or more matches—remains on the table. A final decision could take up to three weeks, meaning Slot is likely to remain on the touchline for key fixtures against Wolves, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle.

The FA is also reviewing several other incidents from what was the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Both clubs may face charges of failing to control their players after a post-match brawl erupted. The scuffle was triggered by Jones’ reaction to Doucouré celebrating in front of Liverpool fans, prompting objects to be thrown from the away section. Pitch invasions also followed James Tarkowski’s dramatic 98th-minute equaliser.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is facing another prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury. Gomez, who had just returned from a six-week layoff to feature in Liverpool’s FA Cup tie against Plymouth, lasted only 10 minutes before breaking down again. Slot confirmed the injury is to the same hamstring, and Gomez will undergo further tests to determine its severity. Surgery remains a possibility, which could sideline him until the final weeks of the season.
