Fossil arm bone suggests dramatic size reduction in homo floresiensis due to island dwarfism
On the Indonesian island of Flores, scientists have unearthed a remarkable fossil—a tiny arm bone belonging to one of the smallest ancient human species known, Homo floresiensis. This diminutive species, often referred to as “hobbits,” stood about 1 meter tall and lived around 700,000 years ago alongside pygmy elephants, giant Komodo dragons, and oversized rats.
The newly discovered fossil, a remarkably small arm bone, provides fresh insights into the evolutionary processes that shaped this ancient human species. Researchers from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and Griffith University’s Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution have highlighted the bone’s significance in understanding the phenomenon of island dwarfism.

The fossil arm bone was compared with previously discovered Homo floresiensis skeletons and new teeth from the same site. The small size of the bone, which measures approximately 100 cm in length, confirms the hypothesis that these early hobbits were significantly smaller than previously thought. In fact, this arm bone is the smallest known from any hominin, underscoring the extent of size reduction.
Island dwarfism is believed to be advantageous for surviving food shortages and a lack of large predators, as smaller body sizes require fewer resources and are less vulnerable to starvation. However, the exact mechanisms by which Homo floresiensis arrived on Flores remain unclear.
