Alcaraz reacts to Sinner’s surprise Monte Carlo entry after major wins

Carlos Alcaraz has admitted he was “surprised” by Jannik Sinner’s decision to compete at the Monte Carlo Masters following his recent run of success in the United States.

Sinner arrives in Monaco after completing the ‘Sunshine Double’, having won titles at Indian Wells and the Miami Open. The achievement placed him in strong form heading into the clay-court season, but Alcaraz had expected the Italian to take a break after such an intense stretch of matches.

Instead, Sinner has chosen to continue competing, entering the Monte Carlo Masters as he begins his transition onto clay. The tournament is a Masters 1000 event, though it is not mandatory for players, making it an opportunity for rest ahead of the upcoming major competitions, including the French Open.

Alcaraz, who is the current world No. 1 and the defending champion in Monte Carlo, acknowledged his surprise at Sinner’s decision but also recognised what it says about his rival’s current form.

He said that Sinner’s presence in the tournament reflects his confidence and ability, suggesting that the Italian is aiming to maintain his momentum rather than pause after his recent victories.

The Spaniard also expressed hope that the two could meet during the tournament. Despite being among the leading players on the tour, they have not faced each other yet this year. A potential meeting in Monte Carlo would only occur if both players progress through their respective sides of the draw to reach the final.

The stakes are high heading into the tournament, with the world No. 1 ranking potentially up for grabs. Sinner could claim the top spot depending on his performance and Alcaraz’s results. A victory in Monte Carlo would be enough to secure the ranking regardless of how Alcaraz performs, while other scenarios could also see him move into first place.

Both players have been given byes into the second round. Sinner is set to face Ugo Humbert, while Alcaraz will take on the winner of the match between Stan Wawrinka and Sebastian Baez.

Despite returning to the tournament as defending champion, Alcaraz indicated that his focus is not on retaining the title but on rediscovering his rhythm on clay.

He spoke about his enjoyment of the surface and the importance of the clay season in his development as a player. Having grown up playing on clay courts, he described his connection to the surface and the anticipation of returning to it after a long gap.

Alcaraz also reflected on the significance of last year’s Monte Carlo event in shaping his season. He described it as a turning point, noting that his performance there helped him improve and build momentum for the rest of the year.

Following that tournament, he went on a strong run of results, winning 33 of his next 34 matches.

As this year’s competition begins, attention will centre on whether the two leading players can continue their form and potentially meet in the final. With Sinner arriving in strong form and Alcaraz defending his title, the tournament sets the stage for a possible high-profile encounter.
